When Szewai was 4, she took her first dance class and felt deeply inspired by her teacher, who was full of passion and patience. Soon after that, she decided one day she would become a dance teacher just like her.
Graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a BA in Dance, Szewai is trained in a variety of dance forms including ballet, modern, jazz, ballroom and Latin. When she began ballroom dancing, she felt in love with this dance form instantly. What she loves most about ballroom dance is that it requires a partner. You can't dance by yourself at home. You have to go outside, grab a partner and pay full attention to your partner and the music. Ballroom dancing forces us to put down our cell phones and allows us to enjoy real, meaningful human interaction, which is lacking in our technology driven society these days. Szewai has been teaching ballroom dance since 2006. In 2009, she co-founded Ballroom Dance Chicago and grew it to become the city's top-rated ballroom dance studio. And in 2013, she founded Duet Dance Studio as she continues to spread the joy and benefits of partner dancing to the world. Szewai was voted as one of Chicago Top Five Dance Teachers 2013 on Art Intercepts and is a top rated teacher on Dabble.
When Szewai isn't dancing, she enjoys discovering hidden gems in the city, finding great music and making short videos about people and things that inspire her. Her name, Szewai, is a Cantonese name pronounced C-Y, meaning poetry and intelligence.
