Are we human or are we dancer?

Szewai Lee

I believe everyone is born with a natural ability and urge to dance. Many of us get inspired by music and some of us simply enjoy the feeling of moving our body. While you can see the joy of movement easily in kids, it is unfortunate that as we grow older, many of us have lost the ability to move freely. At some point in our lives, we might have started to get self-conscious about moving and dancing in front of people. The fear of being laughed at and being judged has stopped us from dancing altogether.

I meet new students almost every week at the studio. Whether they are learning to dance for an occasion or for fun, most of these people say they have two left feet. "Two left feet" is an interesting idiom as it is a way to tell people that we can't dance. But it is simply not true. No one is born with two left feet so you have to stop telling people and yourself that you can't dance. I understand how difficult and nerve-racking it is to learn to dance as a grown-up after years of avoiding to dance. But everyone can learn to dance as long as you let go of the unnecessary self judgement as it is what hinders us from learning. Dance steps might take time to learn, but trust me, once you relax and enjoy moving to the music, you will find learning to dance much easier and enjoyable.

"Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance."
